Guided Home

I've always been what I jokingly refer to as "directionally challenged." As I've gotten older, my sense of direction has improved but I must admit that I rely a lot on my husband or my GPS to help me if I get lost. One evening I went out for a bike ride. Deciding to deviate from one of my normal routes, I took a turn down an unfamiliar street. I continued taking various turns, enjoying the crisp fall weather and time alone but when I chose to head back home, I realized I was lost. I didn't panic, because I knew I was close to home, and I had my cell phone to call my husband or use my GPS, if I realized I was in trouble. As I rode my bike, I said aloud, "Ok Jesus, I'm lost. I need your help." Before I knew it, I had found my way out of the neighborhood and was heading back down a familiar road. This moment got me thinking about how easily people can miss the path that God has for them and how even those that know Him can get off course.
Maybe you or someone you love has chosen to deviate from God's path. When anyone chooses to veer off course with God down unfamiliar pathways, it is inevitable that they will get lost. When one chooses their own way, instead of God's way, the consequences of those choices can be dire. Proverbs 14:12 and Proverbs 16:25 say, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." The world offers different paths for us to choose and it operates from a standard that will rationalize certain choices as fun, normal or acceptable, but our standard as women of God should come from the wisdom God has set before us. In Matthew 7, Jesus said, "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it" (Matthew 7:13-14).
Following God's way is not always easy and it's not always popular. As a matter of fact, following God's way will sometimes be difficult and even lonely. Not everyone will understand your choices, if you choose to follow where Holy Spirit leads you. You may have to go against the grain of what the crowd is doing, in order to be obedient to God. As godly women, we have to make the choice to tune out the noise of the world, full of its views and opinions, and tune in to God. The guidance of God is what matters most in this life, so allow the Holy Spirit to be your guide. John 16:13 says, "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come."
If you or someone you love has lost their way, don't lose heart, because there is hope! Just like a reliable husband or handy GPS, God will guide and redirect us if we get off course. God's guidance is perfect, and He will never lead us astray. He is always available and willing to direct us where we should go, if we realize that we have lost our way. When we humble ourselves before the Lord, confessing our sins and repenting of them, God will not hold our past mistakes against us. 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." Not only does God forgive us and cleanse us when we confess our sins to him, but he takes it one step further and forgets them! Isaiah 43:25 says, "I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more." Psalm 103:10-12 says, "He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us."

No matter how far you have fallen from God, you don't have to panic, because you are closer to home than you may know. Psalm 48:14 says, "For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end." When we fall short of God's grace or otherwise lose our way, our Father God, in His great mercy, is waiting for us with open arms. Not only will God take us under the shelter of His wings and guide us by his Holy Spirit, even when we fail him, but he will strengthen us, meet our needs and cause us to grow and flourish. Isaiah 58:11 says, "The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail." If you have lost your way, I want to encourage you to simply say aloud, "Ok Jesus, I'm lost," and He will redirect you and get you back on track to fulfill the plan He has for your life.
